I regularly browse those blogs which post deleted albums in the hope of replacing my long-lost vinyl. In so doing I come across albums which I’ve never heard of but intrigue me.
And this was one of them ..
Unique Records LP-115 1958
In 1957, Leana Anderson, then aged 78, realised a lifetime’s ambition by recording an album which, in its awfulness, has since become a classic because, like the old ‘B’ movies which were so bad that you had to watch, you have to gawp and listen to it all.
And that got me thinking of other really annoying tracks I’ve got in my archives. Obviously I shouldn’t have kept them, but I’m a music keptomaniac which is fortunate for you because you can now share the pain and pleasure with me.
I must admit though that there are just one or two which I deliberately went in search for. Step forward the ghost of Mrs. Miller another grandmother. She may well have been inspired by Leana who died in 1973 before her cult status could really catch up to her. Mrs. Miller, however, did somewhat better in terms of record sales, if not in musical terms.
You may actually want more of a couple of my selection. Allan Smethurst, the ‘Singing Postman’ came from a small town called Diss, in the eastern English county of Norfolk, as did John, a classmate at university. So, nostalgia being what it always used to be, I managed to track down his album and can upload it if anyone requests it.
I did think of including a Celine Dion track, or Men At Work’s Down Under. If you’ve ever had them as the only choice of music in a car journey of three and more hours you will understand that I couldn’t put myself through those experiences again.
One sadly missed artist whose albums I’ve used to get rid of unwanted guests is Ivor Cutler. But I have too much respect for his eccentric humour and whimsy to include it here.
After all, it was he who said, “You can’t erase a love letter with a nipple, however rubbery it is.”
