Dan P. Quinn, once of this parish, has turned me on to lots of good music, including ‘In Nem‘, a version of Terry Riley’s In C performed by the gamelan group of the Solo Institute of Arts and co-ordinated by DPQ. I reviewed it here, with listening samples here.
What I have learned since is that Riley’s minimalist muse was more inspired by Indian ragas, and that it was his fellow minimalist composer Steve Reich who took gamelan as an inspiration.
So what could be more natural than an Indonesian gamelan group playing a Reich composition?
Thanks for that Dan.
