“My first impression was that Jimi Hendrix would make a great jazz musician.”
– Keith Altham
Jazz guitarists such as Pat Metheny and Nguyên Lê (videos) have covered his songs, so what Keith Altham thought some 40 years ago holds true today.
I never got to see Hendrix play live even though I was at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 for what I believe was his last gig. It was cold, he played in the early morning, and I was sound asleep under my Czech army greatcoat. But hey (Joe), I’m familiar with his music – who isn’t?
This is a selection of covers of his songs from my archives, only one of which is on the sometimes superb compilation Stone Free released in ’93.
1 Kronos Quartet – Purple Haze
2 Urban Turban – Voodoo Child (Bergpolka)
3 Nguyên Lê – Up From The Skies
4 Maria Pia de Vito – If Six Was Nine
5 Jimi Hendrix – House of the Rising Sun
6 Boris Savoldelli – Crosstown Traffic
7 Iiro Rantala String Trio – Freedom
8 Luna Lee – Voodoo Chile
9 Svetlyo Zhilev – Purple Haze
